September
17th is Constitution Day!
How
will you celebrate?
Our Founding
Fathers signed the Constitution of the United States of America on September 17,
1787. We owe our lives, liberty and prosperity to those who had the sacrificial
vision to give us a limited constitutional government.
Do we really know what the Constitution says and what it means in our
lives in 2007?
As I lobbied at
the Nevada Legislature this year I noticed more than ever before that Legislators
have no idea what limited Constitutional government means.
They think government is supposed to “solve” all of our problems.
Instead, we realize “that government is the problem.”
In 2006, a new
law was passed requiring some federal employees to take a 25-minute tutorial on
the U.S. Constitution. Senator
Robert C. Byrd (D-WV) sponsored this law, along with a similar law requiring
every public school to “hold an educational program on the United States
Constitution on September 17, which is Constitution Day.”
Eagle Forum
President Phyllis Schlafly stated, “Byrd deserves our thanks for this great
idea since most Americans, including public officials, are abysmally
ignorant of the text and the meaning of our Constitution. The
only thing the matter with his laws is that he should have required a
constitutional tutorial to be taken by judges and Members of Congress.” I
would add however, that it should also be required of State Legislators and
other local public officials as they are also “abysmally ignorant”.
Isaiah 5:13
correctly identifies the sad results of this abysmal ignorance. “Therefore
my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge…” None
are so entirely enslaved as those who think they are free. Americans still think
they are free. One of the greatest
eye-opening experiences for me during the last 12 or so years has been the
recognition, as I fight for Constitutional principles at the Legislature, that
most of us have no idea of how much of our heritage of liberty is already lost.
Many of you have
recently received as a thank you from Nevada Families/Eagle Forum the
exceptional DVD “A More Perfect Union.”
This superb motion picture recreates the important debates leading to the
establishment of the United States Constitution.
At this critical time in our nation’s history—this movie comes as an
important reminder of the foundations of our liberties. We hope you will
share “A More Perfect Union” with family and friends and even the
schools who have a mandate to study
the Constitution for September 17th. “A
More Perfect Union” is approved for use in the schools.
If you would
like a copy or an additional copy of “A More Perfect Union” or the companion
study guide please send us a donation this month. There is nothing more important to preserving and restoring
liberty than an informed “we the people”.
Thank you for your support of our educational efforts! We encourage you
to celebrate Constitution Day by understanding true liberty a little better.
