ALERT:
Oppose AJR6 Annual Sessions
Hearing: TODAY
Thursday, March 19, 3:45
Assembly Committee Elections, Procedures, Ethics, and Constitutional
Amendments.
I don’t know when the vote will be, probably on a later date.
AJR6 is a proposed Constitutional Amendment. It must pass the Legislature twice and then be placed on the ballot for a vote of the people. The Legislature now meets for 120 days every odd numbered year. This bill provides that in addition to the 120 days, they would meet an additional 60 days in the even numbered years. The legislation would also provide that they get paid for the entire time the Legislature is in session, not just 60 days as is now the case. We think that paying legislators for the entire length of the session contributes to maintaining a citizen legislature, so we agree with this portion of the proposed amendment. However, we still oppose AJR6.
Annual sessions lead to larger government. The longer they are in session the more legislation they produce which leads to bigger, more expensive and more complex government. Texas which has 32 congressional districts and a population of 24 million meets only 60 days every other year. Why does Nevada, with only 3 congressional districts and a population of 2.4 million, need to meet every year instead of every other year and for 3 times as long as Texas?
