Oppose: IP1 The Room Tax Increase sponsored by the Teachers Union.
The full Senate will meet as a Committee of the Whole on Monday, March 9th at 11:15am. They will probably vote during the hearing, which will be in room 1214 at the Legislative Building in Carson.
The NSEA--Teachers Union gathered signatures to bring this tax increase before the Legislature. The Legislature can pass it or not pass it, in which case it goes on the ballot. The Assembly passed it 35 to 7. The seven courageous souls voting no were Assemblymen: Goedhart, Cobb, Settelmeyer, Hambrick, Gustavson, McArthur, and Christensen. Every time we vote to give the government schools more money we further enslave ourselves as we grow the powerful Teachers Union lobby and the Education Establishment which are pro-big government, higher taxes and against choice in education. The greater their influence and control, the worse the education of children in the government schools becomes.
Initiative Petition number 1 would raise the room tax by 3 percent in Washoe and Clark counties. Washoe County’s room tax is already at 13.5% so because the measure puts a cap of 13% in effect it really won’t impact Washoe County, but will raise the room tax in Clark.
Why should we care? Last year Las Vegas lost $80,000,000 (million) in convention business. The major reason for the state budget crisis is because of the tremendous downturn in the gaming business in Las Vegas, and hence the tax revenues collected. If the room tax is increased by 3% many more conventions will choose not to hold their conventions in Las Vegas. This will further hurt the tax revenues in Nevada and increase the budget crisis. The way to encourage business in the economic downturn is to cut taxes not increase them. Assemblyman Ty Cobb was quoted in the Reno Gazette Journal as saying, “It’s like hanging a big sign that says Nevada doesn’t want your business.” If the Senate, hence the Legislature, does not pass IP1 it will go on the ballot and the people will be able to vote on it.
MESSAGE: Vote NO on IP1 the room TAX INCREASE by the Teacher’s Union. Let it go to the ballot so the people can vote and decide.
