Please place this email in the record.  I cannot attend today’s joint Taxation Committee hearing on the Budget Crises because I am in Salt Lake attending a seminar.

Americans pay 50-60% of their income in federal, state, and local taxes.  Americans pay more in taxes than they pay for housing, food, health care, education, transportation, and recreation combined.

Much of this tax burden is in hidden taxes.  My brother, who had a roofing company, explained it this way to his customers.  When I give you an estimate for a new roof for $5,000, $2,500 of that covers taxes, fees, permits, etc.  You don’t see the tax portion on you bill, but it is there.

Because of the economy, people are desperately struggling to pay for the basics.  My son and daughter-in-law have 4 small children ages 6 and under.  They have two small businesses; a wholesale flooring company which was flourishing 2 years ago is now almost defunct because there is no business. They also have a small handyman business.

My son told me yesterday that they had gone to the grocery store and spent $300 on groceries.  They had not been able to go to grocery shopping for 3 weeks because his clients, who owed him money, had not paid and because work was very slow. Last week he had to borrow money from me to pay for gas so he could drive his work truck to go to work.  They can’t use their family car because it is in need of repair and they don’t have the money to fix it.  When I am home from Carson on the weekends they have been driving my car so they could go to church.  Just last year they were doing just fine financially.

My son and daughter-in-law have never taken any government help.  They have worked long and hard hours to take care of their family.  They have generously helped others and been responsible citizens. Now they are struggling just to put food on their table.

Will increased taxes help them to feed their family?  Or will increase taxes plunge them further into a financial abyss.  Will increase taxes provide their clients with additional money to hire them? Or place additional financial burdens on their clients, so they can’t afford to hire them.

Government must not place additional tax burdens on productive taxpayers many of whom are now losing their jobs and businesses.  Who will be able to pay the taxes?

Gerald Celente, the world’s leading forecaster from the Trends Research Institute, has forecast a tax revolt in the U.S. It isn’t hard to understand…do you choose to pay your taxes or feed your children?

 Thank you, Janine Hansen
