One if by land, and two if by sea…
We should all remember the famous lines of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in his Poem of Paul Revere’s Ride.
He said to his friend, "If
the British march
By land or sea from the town to-night,
Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch
Of the North Church tower as a signal light,--
One if by land, and two if by sea;
And I on the opposite shore will be,
Ready to ride and spread the alarm
Through every Middlesex village and farm,
For the country folk to be up and to arm."
I have struggled to know just what to write in this newsletter. As I was pondering what to share with you, the picture of Paul Revere and the words of this poem returned repeatedly to my mind. I have oft been in the mode of Paul Revere “Ready to ride and spread the alarm”. In this letter I do not depart from that worthy cause, but expand it to the macro events around us.
Economic & Political Chaos: As we look at the headlines we feel the world is sinking into chaos. From just one source the Wall Street Journal (2/20/10) we read, "You are witnessing a fundamental breakdown of the American dream, a systemic breakdown of our democracy and our capitalism, a breakdown driven by the blind insatiable greed of Wall Street: Dysfunctional government, insane markets, economy on the brink. Multiply that many times over and see a world in total disarray. Ignore it now, tomorrow will be too late."
Food prices skyrocket: The Bureau of Labor Statistics released their Producer Price Index (PPI) report for March 2010 and it is frightening. Food prices in March 2010 rose by 2.4%, its sixth consecutive monthly increase and the largest monthly increase in more than 26 years. The bureau fears food inflation could be coming on a grand scale, and it will be devastating. Prices increased during the past year as follows: fresh and dry vegetables up 56.1%, fresh fruits and melons up 28.8%, eggs 33.6%, pork 9.1%, beef and veal 10.7% and dairy products up 9.7%. Last year prices were similarly increasing at alarming rates. Many did not notice these extreme price increases because manufacturers reduced packaging sizes or, in the case of dry goods such as cereals, they just reduced the number of ounces of food in the packages.”
War: “Syria and Iran are providing Hizballah with rockets and missiles of ever-increasing capability,” US Defense Secretary Robert Gates told a news conference which he addressed jointly with Israeli Defense minister Ehud Barak on Tuesday, April 27, 2010. “And we’re at a point now, where Hizballah has far more rockets and missiles than most governments in the world,” Gates went on to say, “and this is obviously destabilizing for the whole region and we’re watching it very carefully.” Barak then said: We (Israel) do not intend to provoke any kind of major collision in Lebanon or with Syria, but are watching these developments closely.” “However, DEBKA-Net-Weekly’s intelligence and military sources report that neither defense chiefs represented the true state of affairs governing the ever-precarious Israeli-Syrian-Lebanese border triangle. According to intelligence reaching Washington from Iranian sources last week, Tehran is reckoned by some to have resolved to ignite a Middle East war within the next three months – May, June or July 2010.”
EMP terrorist attack: “A major threat to America has been largely ignored by those who could prevent it. An electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack could wreak havoc on the nation's electronic systems-shutting down power grids, sources, and supply mechanisms. An EMP attack on the United States could irreparably cripple the country. It could simultaneously inflict large-scale damage and critically limit our recovery abilities…One estimate warns that the likely costs from the detonation of an EMP weapon over the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area could exceed $770 billion. Millions of Americans could suffer death or injury, and social chaos could ensue.” Heritage Foundation http://www.heritage.org/Research/Reports/2008/10/Electromagnetic-Pulse-EMP-Attack-A-Preventable-Homeland-Security-Catastrophe
These reports are a miniscule sampling of the myriad of warnings available in the media and on the Internet.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
The first thing to do is to make sure our hearts are right. I go to the source of God’s wisdom, the Bible.
“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
“Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
“Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with the truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
“And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.
“Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
”Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.” Ephesians KJV 6:11-18.
Yesterday, as I was watching the television there came a warning of a severe thunderstorm with quarter-
sized hail. The warning was to take shelter immediately. Can we do less as we see the warnings of world-wide chaos?
Sensible Preparations
Several years ago I read an article about the US government advising our overseas Embassies/Consulates to have on hand 90 days supply of food in case of any kind of disruption. Unfortunately, I have been unable to locate the original article, but it makes sense. A 3-day emergency pack will only hold you over until possibly the government can help you. Do you really want to depend on the Government for help? Think of Katrina!
Three months supply of food of the things you regularly eat would provide you with a cushion against the rising cost of food. In addition, it would provide some peace of mind in case of natural disasters, the impending dollar collapse, pandemics with potential quarantine, terrorist attacks like an Electronic Magnetic Pulse, job loss--all of which are possible. If you are like me and you eat many fresh foods think about the possibility of a truck strike which could stretch from weeks to months and nothing to buy on the store shelves. What would you have to eat in your pantry and freezer? Buy accordingly. Also, it’s not too late to plant a garden.
Water of course is essential and I have posted information on the website on storing and purifying water. It’s not practical to store more than about 2 weeks of water. You need 1-2 gallons per person per day. If you want a good water purifier, I recommend the Big Berkey. www.nevadafamilies.org
Some other things you should have on hand are extras of the things you use everyday, bar soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, detergent, medication, first aid supplies, toilet paper, etc. Make a list of what you don’t want to do without. I have included a more complete preparedness list in this newsletter.
You should also have some cash on hand as potentially ATM’s might not be working or the government could declare a bank holiday.
Become informed. There are probably hundreds of websites with excellent information on preparedness, but before you spend hundreds of hours looking or hundreds of dollars do the simple things as listed above: Food, water, things you use every day, cash. Then worry about the rest. You haven’t much time. As the Wall Street Journal said, “Ignore it now, tomorrow will be too late."
By Janine Hansen
· EMERGENCY KIT: The Red Cross has an excellent pamphlet entitled “Your Family Disaster Supplies Kit” for a 3-day emergency kit for home and car. See www.redcross.org or call the local office.
· WATER: The most important consideration in preparedness is water. You should have a minimum emergency supply of 1 gallon per person per day for two weeks for drinking and other purposes. Use food grade containers like soda pop & juice bottles to store water. Store unscented Clorox or other water purifiers. Label all containers by content and date.
· SANITATION: If the water is not running what sanitation arrangements have you made? You should have bar soap, detergent, disinfectant, a port-a-potty, baby wipes to clean your hands, extra underwear and socks, water for washing dishes, plastic garbage bags for disposing of wastes, and plenty of disposable/or regular diapers and plastic pants. Toilet paper is always at a premium during disaster situations. Store plenty of water for short and long term. Consider keeping old phone books for sanitation use. They’re free and better than nothing.
· FOOD: You should have food in the initial stages of an emergency that does not have to be cooked. Store things you will eat. Long-term storage should include bulk grains, beans, powdered milk, cooking oil, salt, sugar or honey and dehydrated foods. Learn how to use them. If you store wheat you need a non-electric grinder. Date all storage.
· HEALTH: You should have extra prescription medicines on hand, an emergency first aid kit, extra supplies and some knowledge of first aid. Extra vitamin C and multi-vitamins, herbs and natural remedies may prove useful. Does your family have special needs, like an infant or an elderly?
· ELECTRICITY: Consider what you would do if you had no electricity. You need flashlights with extra batteries. Consider a solar battery re-charger. You should have alternative sources of heat, light, and cooking. Fire places, wood stoves, kerosene heaters and lanterns, candles, camp stoves are possibilities. Have fuel and matches on hand. Kerosene stores well for several years. A kerosene lantern will work for 5 hours a day, for one year on 12 gallons of kerosene. Solar and battery lanterns work well.
· COMMUNICATIONS: You need a radio preferably that has battery, solar, and hand crank power possibilities. You need a plan to get in touch with your family. See Red Cross pamphlet “Your Family Disaster Plan.”
· CLOTHING & SHOES: In a disaster you may need special clothing like, ponchos, boots, extra socks, underwear, and warm coats. If you are considering long-term preparedness ask yourself, “Could I get along for a year on the clothing I have? Most adults could get by with just a few extras, but what about growing children. Consider getting bigger sizes they can grow into at garage and rummage sales and thrift stores. If you have a baby you’ll need cloth diapers, pins and plastic pants.
· SHELTER: In case of an earthquake or other disaster you may need a tent sufficient for a temporary shelter. The Japanese spent literally months in makeshift tents after the Kobe earthquake. You should have at least 3 extra blankets per person or a good sleeping bag and pad.
· MONEY: During the Northridge quake in Los Angeles the banks, ATM’s, and stores were closed for at least 3 days. You need to have cash on hand in small denominations and lots of change. Consider what you would do if the disaster lasts longer than a few days or a bank holiday is declared.
Catastrophic Predictions for 2010: I became acquainted with the World’s number One Trends Researcher Gerald Celente in 2007. All over the internet you can view dozens of interviews and hear his incredibly accurate predictions of catastrophic events for 2010 which are used by huge corporations and the media to plan for the future. He even predicted the Tea Party movement. http://www.trendsresearch.com/index.htm.
Chuck Muth presents Janine Hansen with the “Conservative of the Year” Award in Las Vegas at the Citizens Outreach Foundation Conference on May 22, 2010.

For one who is far more used to being on the tip of the spear and receiving the slings and arrows of opponents this Award was remarkable. It was awarded especially for Janine’s work at the Nevada Legislature as a citizen advocate. Your participation by email and phone calls is essential to any success we have at the Legislature.
Thanks!
