Voter Guide Candidate Questionnaire and Responses

County and State School Board

Note: Comments will not be included in the published Nevada Families Voter Guide due to format restrictions.

1) Will you support legislation to stop illegal aliens from receiving Nevada’s Millennium Scholarships and other Nevada taxpayer-funded services?

2) Do you support TASC (the Tax And Spending Control ballot question) which limits tax and spending increases to growth and inflation? See website: http://www.tasc4nevada.com/index.html

3) Do you support a parent’s right to choose government, charter, private, religious, or home schooling for their children?

4) Do you support the "Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act" and its companion Nevada legislation, which protects and safeguards the privacy of student and family information in government and school programs?

http://www.eagleforum.org/educate/1997/oct97/rights.html

5) Arizona recently passed an opt-in provision for any mental health screening for children in the government schools. This insures parents will have the right to decide the health care for their own children. Do you support an opt-in provision for any mental health screening in the schools including Teen Screen? http://www.edwatchnevada.com/

6) Do you support parental notification and active parental consent for pupils to participate in any psychological testing or treatment like Teen Screen, nosy surveys, and controversial instructions about drugs, death and suicide education, sex and AIDS instruction, and classes that teach homosexuality as an acceptable alternative lifestyle?

7) Do you support medical, religious and philosophical exemptions from mandated vaccines for attendance at school?

8) Do you support the right of parents to determine the best health care for their children and not to be pressured by school employees into giving Ritalin or other psychotropic or anti-depressants drugs to their children?

9) Do you support the required teaching of systematic intensive phonics?

10) Do you support the teaching of traditional American documents (the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, etc.), history, and government in schools?

11) Will you oppose lowering the age to begin school, and oppose all-day mandatory kindergarten?

12) "No Child Left Behind" was the final federal takeover of education. Do you oppose the unfunded federal mandates imposed by NCLB and support a return to local control?

13) The courts have determined that students have the right of religious expression at school on an equal basis with other forms of speech—including in their schoolwork, personal communication, books and wearing apparel. Do you support the right of religious expression on an equal basis in the government schools?

14) A 2003 survey involving 76,000 students "found no difference" in drug use between schools that test students for drug use and those that don’t. (Reuters 3/19 2006) Will you oppose random drug testing for students by the government schools?

15) California voters on June 6, 2006 rejected by 60.9% a ballot measure to provide government-regulated universal preschool for every 4-year-old in the state. Will you oppose any legislation/measure to provide universal government regulated preschool for children in Nevada?

What do you view as the proper role of government?

Barbara Howe –  Did Not Fill Out the Questionnaire but stated in writing on the bottom of the questionnaire, “I appreciate the opportunity to share my views about the Carson City Public School District.  As most voters are aware there are a number of issues facing our communities the least of which is the diversity of opinions which makes our country great. A community office such as the School Board will not succeed solving problems through finding division amongst the citizens but rather unifying us through commonalities.  The ‘author’(s)’ of this questionnaire obviously do not share this opinion.  Multiple guess ‘what is the correct answer?’ is not appropriate for the Carson City School board.”
